Analysis of a title sequence
Psycho
The title sequenc for Psycho uses many differnt techniques that are sterotypical to the thiller genre in order to create suspense within the titel sequence. Sound effects and editing techniques are used in order to encourage the readeer to anticipate what is coming next.
The sound used within the title sequence is key to creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for the audeince. Due to the title sequence features no characters, emotion is portrayed through the music. When the music starts there are five dramatic beats and then fast paced mucic beging and and this suggests a sense of urgency and distress. Added later is music played from a violin and this speeds up the urgency even more and crates a feeling that the storyline is going to be dramatic and fast paces. The violin notes could also be symblolic as they could represent a person screaming which we find out later in the film could Marion Crane in the famous shower scene. The whole of this non diagetic sound creates tension for the audeince as the music is so violent and they will be intrigued by the film from the opening sequence as they will want to know what the music is portraying.
The video sequence starts with the films studios pamamount logo. Then the title sequnce starts with lines being being a key feature throughout, this could suggest a typical thriller film, for example that character within the film are criminals and the bar represent prison and them getting caught. The colour scheme used within the sequence is grey and black and this is subversive of the thriller stereotype as usually colour with connotation of danger such as red are used. However the film is a black and white film so they might have just stuck with this theme to not give any clues away. The name Psycho is also split into bars when the titles are shown and this could suggest that the film is going to be distorted and unpredictable. However it could also suggest something about the storyline as there could be a psychopath within the film who needs to be behind bars.
