Typical iconography -
Knives
Are typically associated with psychological/thrillers/horrors. They have connotations of death, blood, fear etc. It usually represents death or pain. It is often used in films such as Hitchcocks film 'Psycho.'
Shadows
Are often used. It plays with the audiences fear. Usually when a shadow is used it is portraying someone following another or being in their presence without them knowing.
Running Water
It causes tension between the audience and the film as it represents death because it's not being turned off or the draining of someones life.
Confined Spaces
It often makes the audience feel fear for the protagonist as they will feel calustophobic. It creates the thought of no escaping and no where to hide. E.g Hitchcock uses confined spaces in the film Vertigo to play on characters emotions.
