Genre research - Storylines and Settings

Genre research - Psycological thriller storylines

A psychological thriller usually contains a conflict betwen the main characters in an emotional and mental way rather that purely physcial. An example of a psychological thriller is Silence of the Lambs. Throughout the film clarice straling, an FBI agent, atmmepts to gain an insight into the mind of a killer. She does this by talking to a psychopath, Hannibal Lecter, in order to solve the case she has been assigned to that involves saving a woman from a similar type of killer. It is also believed throughout the plot that Lecter may have the anwsers of how to locate the killer. However there is a conflict between Straling and Lecter as he feels her has to gain her confidence before he will reveal anything.

Storylines

 - There is often a structural elemenet to the plot, for example there may be a turning point that makes the main character unable to live a normal life so they have to go on a journey to solve the issue.
- The hero  should have altered by the end of the plot and grown as they will have had to deal with many issues in order to be invoved in the final scene.
- There should be any coincidences within the film as even though they can be key to providing chracter conflict they aren't largely interesting to the audeince.
- All lose end should be resolved by the end of the film, whether it includes a twist or not. Typically the good will have won over evil and the hero will have gone on a journey of self discvovery.

Settings

Stereotypically thriller films are set in a rual area due to this type of environment being more abandoned and this gives off the connotations of a place being disturbing. The audeince will expect a a thriller film to feature this environement and due to this they won't be as suprised by the plot. A psychological thriller that is set in a rural area is The Shining.

However films within the thriller genre can also be set in urban area such as a city. This isn't typical
but as the plot will take place in an everyday setting  the audeince may be more surpised due to them beliveing the storyline more as it is happening in a familair place. Usually in these type of thriller films the protagonists life is normal and then suddenly everything changes. For example in The Black Swan the protagonist is living in New York whcih wouldn't be a sterotypical setting for a thriller film.
